7th Grade Homework

Beginning of Distance Learning and 1920s Unit Modules

As you probably already know, Governor Ducey and Superintendent of Public Instruction Hoffman have announced that all AZ schools will be closed until the end of the year.  So, I am going to use my website in a slightly different way than before. As I said in the email, the units we will be studying will be posted in Google Classroom. This website will serve as the directions about what to do for each module and assignment.

Text Explorations 7 & 8 (F, 5/8)  The Text Explorations are still due May 8th by 11:59 PM.  Since these were originally assigned in August, students have known about them for a considerable amount of time.  They are still in Google Classroom. With the schools and public libraries closed (and Bookmans also), some students may have a challenge getting books to finish off these two assignments.  If any student is having a hard time getting a book to read for either of these assignments, please email me about it. We will work something out.

Assignments in Google Classroom's "Quarter 4"

-- The Q4 Goals assignment was already due and will be graded for this quarter in StudentVUE.

-- The Website Suggestions and Video Suggestions assignments are not graded.  They are Google Forms for students to fill out if they want to suggest a website or video that they have found that might be useful to the 7th grade curriculum.  As I said before, this is not required, but suggestions of a website or video will result in additional points to their Citizen badge and points for their polis in the competition.

-- The Character Sheet assignment is an assignment that would be good for the students to complete.  In the Polis Competition last year, each student chose an ancient Greek name for themself. You are not doing the Greek Simulation this year, but you should create a new identity for yourself that you use during the simulation.  You can be as creative, although historically accurate, as they want to be. The part that talks about a "portrait" is a picture of themself. They can use an online avatar creator to create a picture of themself, a picture of a drawing they drew of themself, or a picture they find on the internet.  (Leave the section for "Reputation" blank. I'm not sure if we will be using that later.). The second page of the Character Sheet is important because that is where they keep track of what level they are for each badge and keep track of the modules as they finish. It would be good to have that Character Sheet done before they try to do any of the 1920s modules.  STUDENTS DO NOT NEED TO CLICK THE "TURN IN' BUTTON WHEN THEY ARE FINISHED WITH THIS ASSIGNMENT.

     1920s Module 1: Basics

-- Some of this module was already done when we were physically in school.  This includes the vocab sheet that was already due and the anticipatory video we watched in class..  If students did not finish their 1920s Vocab assignment on time, they can make a copy of it, fill it out, and share it with me.  (This is the only time students can cut and paste images into the "Nonlinguistic" column.

-- The Conflict/Change Quick Write is a Google Form that you should open, read the prompt and respond to in writing.  This is not a formal piece of writing, it is to get you to start thinking about what you will be learning in the 1920s unit.  Feel free to talk to an adult before you start to write your response. (All responses should be a paragraph and although they are not graded on conventions, please spell and use correct grammar to the best of your ability.)

-- Students should set up notes like we did in the binders for each of the 1920s areas of conflict.  (“Radicalism”, “Racism & Nativism”, “Prohibition”, “Women”, and “Scopes Trial”) As you research each conflict you are looking for two main ideas: 1) anything that describes what the conflict is and 2) what are the results to American society because of the conflict.  You could use notebook paper to do this; one side could be the notes explaining the conflict and the backside could be for the results of that conflict. You could also use a Google Doc to type up the notes if that is easier for you.

-- You checked out a social studies textbook that you took home.  (Let me know if yours is still at school.) Use the textbook to take notes on the five different conflicts in the 1920s.  The chapter is, Ch 22 The Roaring Twenties (732-755).

-- The Toto Brothers silent vaudeville film is just for fun.  Movies were silent during the 1920s because they hadn't figured out how to add sound to the new technology of moving films.

     1920s Module 2: Radicalism

-- Modules 2 through 6 are supplementary information for each of the areas of conflict during the 1920s.  Use each of the resources to add to your notes about the 5 areas of 1920s conflict. Start with the bottom resource and work your way up.  (Older items are posted in Google Classroom at the bottom, newer items are posted at the top. YES, I know I can rearrange the order, but I’m going to stick with the default!)

-- The Red Scare Crackdown are three American Experience videos of 5 or less minutes each.  When you click on the icon it takes you to the first one and then you can use the arrow on the video screen to get to the next two.  (Or click on the icons below the video you were watching.)

-- History vs. Vladimir Lenin is a TED-Ed video that puts Lenin, one of the main founders of Communism on trial.  Watch and write down anything that helps you describe the conflict.

-- Mrs. Lipsett Writes a Letter is a letter in the National Archives from the time period.  Read what she has to say and use it to add more detail to your notes.

-- When you have finished all of the other parts of the module, open up the Radicalism Summary document and fill out the form.  Write a paragraph explaining what you learned about 1920s radical thought.  Be sure to write your full first and last name in the form.

     1920s Module 3: Racism & Nativism

-- Start with the 1920s Racism & Nativism PPT and read through it.  As you read through it, see what you can add to your notes.

-- Use the 1920s Racism & Nativism documents and videos to get some more focused information about this conflict.  Any new information add to your notes.

-- When you are satisfied that you have used the documents and videos well, open the 1920s Racism & Nativism Short Write and answer the prompt.

     1920s Module 4: Prohibition

-- Use the Prohibition documents and videos to get some more focused information about this conflict.  Any new information add to your notes.  (The Women's Temperance Movement has a bunch of documents to scroll through and analyze.  The Khan Academy has a lot of articles, but you only need to read the section about Prohibition.)

-- The Prohibition and Its Consequences activity is two part.  Students should look at all of the documents and then put them on the scale where they think they should be.  Then, when they have placed them all, they should take a screenshot of the scale.  The last part of the activity is to open up the Google Form and answer the questions there.  (If you have any problems getting a screenshot, be creative and see if you can solve the problem.  If not, don't sweat it.  If you solve it, let me know; it could be worth a lot of points in the competition!)

Homework for Week of 1/6/2020

Happy New Year and Welcome Back!!

Monday, 1/6

Trial Prep (On-going)  At the end of Quarter 2 students students had started to prepare for a mock trial in class about the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire.  Unfortunately, as a result of my selection for jury duty taking me out of the classroom for two days, we had to postpone the trial until this week.  Students should continue to work on being prepared for the trial.

Q3 Goals (F, 1/10)  In Google Classroom students need to open up the Q3 Goals assignment and fill it out.  I am going to give students time in class to work on it tomorrow so they can be as successful as they choose to be and so I can also conference with students to help them get specific feedback on how to be successful in Social Studies.

S1 Vocab Test (F, 1/10)  On Friday there is a vocab test over all of the vocab we have studied in Quarter 1 and Quarter 2.  Students should have all of the vocab sheets in their binders, but if they are missing any, they can go to Grobe View or Google Classroom and access all of the previous sheets.  Also, In Grobe View are all of the materials we used for class and all of the Powerpoints I used to instruct students.

Grade Check (T, 1/7)  To get ready for the conference with me and in order to do the Q3 Goals assignment, students need to check their grades in StudentVUE.  My grades are updated and are the grades that will be on the official report card on Friday.  (Remember, this is a digital report card; no paper report cards are printed off and sent home to the parents.)

Homework for Week of 10/14

Monday, 10/14

Binder Check (W, 10/16)  At the end of class on Tuesday, students need to leave their Social Studies binders.  Over the break I am going to grade them on how organized they are.  This is probably going to be the first grade for Quarter 2.  Students should go to Smiley View and review the document "19-20 Copy of Your Binder" to see what should be in the binder.  If anything from the document is missing, or if there are extra items that are not on the document, the student cannot get a "3."  Students have a week and almost a half to make copies of any missing items.  To find Smiley View, students should go to Google Classroom and open up the link to Smiley View or should go directly to their Google Drive, Shared With Me, and then open up the folder Smiley View there.

Grade Check (Tonight)  All assignments have been graded so students should check their grades tonight.  Whatever the grade is in StudentVUE tonight is going to be their final grade for Quarter 1.

What Happened? (W, 8/28)  In Google Classroom there is an assignment where the students write about what they think about what happened to Sam Smiley.  The main thing that I am grading on is whether or not they can back up their opinions with facts from the Sam Smiley case file.

Sam Smiley Organizer (W, 8/28)  Last week the students were analyzing the Sam Smiley case file.  While they worked in their small groups, they kept track of the evidence in a graphic organizer.  On Wednesday, in class, I will collect those graphic organizers.  If students need to look at the evidence again, it is in Smiley View.

Reading Book (T, 8/13) In social studies this year students will need to read two books each quarter.  These are the same two books as the outside reading requirement for ELA.  On Tuesday, every students needs to have the current book that they are reading on their desk, ready to show me.

Parent Contact/Syllabus (F, 8/16) Although students have written this assignment down previously, it is now available for them to do.  Parents, would you please use the provided URL to go to your student’s class period. Please fill out the questions there to allow me to get to know your student better, but also to allow me to set up an email list that I can use in the future to send Email Blasts to convey important information to guardians about social studies.  I greatly appreciate your help in establishing this important school/home communication. Thank you in advance! (Students will thank you too since they will get a Late Coupon for having their guardian fill out the form!)

THIS IS HOMEWORK DUE ON MONDAY ONLY IF STUDENTS DID NOT HAVE THEIR BINDER SUPPLIES FOR FRIDAY.  If students did not have their binder supplies for Friday, they need to organize their binder over the weekend.  Students need to have a 3-ring binder, labeled with their name on the outside or the inside cover of the binder.  This binder stays in the social studies' room so they have more room in their lockers.  They then should have four dividers:

    Bellwork

    VIP

    Constitution

    Vocab

    Current Unit

There should be loose-leaf lined paper after the Bellwork tab and the Current Unit tab.  Spiral notebooks don't work for Social Studies unless they are VERY thin and can be used exclusively in the Current Unit section.
