Greek Unit Modules Directions

Text Explorations 7 & 8 (F, 5/8)  If any student is having a hard time getting a book to read for either of these assignments, please email me about it.  We will work something out.

     Greek Module 1: Basics/Geography

-- The Greek Unit Checklist is a list of all of the activities, videos, assessments for the entire Greek Unit.  It only has what the activity is and if it is graded or for your notes.  Use the checklist as a way to stay organized and so you know the order of what to do.

-- The Greece Vocab assignment is a normal Google Classroom assignment where you simply type in the boxes and click "Turn In" when you are finished.  (Unlike previous vocab assignments, students can cut and paste images into the "Nonlinguistic" column.)

-- Notes are not required.  However, every module has a summary at the end of it to show what you have learned.  Jotting down notes to help you with the graded summaries is not a bad idea.  Some students have shown me their notes in order to show ARETE and gain points for their polis.  ("Arete" is a vocab word and it sums up how to get points in the simulation.)

-- The Greece Google Earth video is a screencast where I use Google Earth to explain Greece's physical geography and how it affected the lives of the ancient Greeks.  I also show you where your poleis are and some other highlights like Mt. Olympus, Delphi, where the Olympics began and Thermopylae, the site of the last stand of the 300 Spartan warriors (and their allies) against the invading Persians.

-- The Greece Geography Presentation is a Google Slides presentation that explains some basics of Greece's geography.  Use it for background information.

-- When you have done all of the above, open up the Greek Geography Summary form and answer the questions to show what you learned about Greece's geography and how it affected the way they lived.

     Greek Module 2: Poleis Spying <In development>

          --

     Greek Module 3: Religion/Myths <In development>

          --

     Greek Module 4: Government <In development>

          --

     Greek Module 5: Fables <In development>

          --

     Greek Module 6: Summary <In development>

Beginning of Distance Learning and China Unit Modules

As you probably already know, Governor Ducey and Superintendent of Public Instruction Hoffman have announced that all AZ schools will be closed until the end of the year.  So, I am going to use my website in a slightly different way than before.  As I said in the email, the units we will be studying will be posted in Google Classroom.  This website will serve as the directions about what to do for each module and assignment.

Text Explorations 7 & 8 (F, 5/8)  The Text Explorations are still due May 8th by 11:59 PM.  Since these were originally assigned in August, students have known about them for a considerable amount of time.  They are still in Google Classroom.  With the schools and public libraries closed (and Bookmans also), some students may have a challenge getting books to finish off these two assignments.  If any student is having a hard time getting a book to read for either of these assignments, please email me about it.  We will work something out.

Assignments in Google Classroom's "Quarter 4"

-- The Q4 Goals assignment was already due and will be graded for this quarter in StudentVUE.

-- The Website Suggestions and Video Suggestions assignments are not graded.  They are Google Forms for students to fill out if they want to suggest a website or video that they have found that might be useful to the 6th grade curriculum.  As I said before, this is not required, but suggestions of a website or video will result in additional points to their Citizen badge and points for their polis in the competition.

-- The Character Sheet assignment is an assignment that would be good for the students to complete.  In the Polis Competition, each student will choose an ancient Greek name for themself.  (I will have more guidance on this when we get to the Greek Unit.). They then can create a new identity for themself that they use during the simulation.  They can be as creative, although historically accurate, as they want to be.  The part that talks about a "portrait" is a picture of themself.  They can use an online avatar creator to create a picture of themself, a picture of a drawing they drew of themself, or a picture they find on the internet.  (Leave the section for "Reputation" blank.  I'm not sure if we will be using that later.). The second page of the Character Sheet is important because that is where they keep track of what level they are for each badge and keep track of the modules as they finish.  It would be good to have that Character Sheet done before they try to do any of the China modules.  STUDENTS DO NOT NEED TO CLICK THE "TURN IN' BUTTON WHEN THEY ARE FINISHED WITH THIS ASSIGNMENT.

     China Module 1: Basics

-- Most of this module was already done when we were physically in school.  This includes all of the animated maps we looked at, the geography assignment we did at the end of Quarter 2 and the vocab sheet that was already due.  If students did not finish their China Vocab assignment on time, they can make a copy of it, fill it out, and share it with me.  (This is the only time students can cut and paste images into the "Nonlinguistic" column.

-- The Development of Chinese Writing Video students can watch on their own time.  They do not need to write any notes or summary for it, but students can always do more than I ask for.  Just let me know what extra you do.

-- The Chinese Writing Game students can just do for fun.  Like the video, there is nothing extra they need to do for this, but they can take it as far as they want.

     China Module 2: Dynasties

-- The China Dynasties Graphic Organizer was started at school and unfortunately resides in their binders in the classroom.  Students do not need to use this exact organizer, but it is there for them to see how to organize their notes when they study the Chinese Dynasties PPT.

-- Students should open and student the Chinese Dynasties PPT.  As they are studying the PPT, they should be taking notes about the information there.  They can organize it like the China Dynasties Graphic Organizer or they can simply take their notes in any notebook they have at home.

-- The Mandate of Heaven image is a flowchart that shows how the ancient Chinese thought the dynasties were affected by the will of the deities.  Students should look over this image to make sure that they understand how dynastic change was believed to happen in ancient China.

-- The two videos and quiz are supplementary and just for extending their knowledge.  They can take notes, or not, on the information.

-- When you have finished all of the other parts of the module, open up the Short Write document and fill out the form.  Do not use your notes or other sources, but write a paragraph explaining how the ancient Chinese thought the Mandate of Heaven works.  Be sure to write your full first and last name in the form.

     China Module 3: Philosophies

-- The students should set up notes to take information about Confucianism, Legalism and Taoism.  They then should use the Confucianism-Legalism-Taoism PPT to get information about each of the philosophies.

-- The next three materials in Google Classroom are videos for the students to watch and get more background information.  The videos are "Confucius, Confucianism and the Analects", "Ted-Ed the Hidden Meanings of Yin and Yang", and the last video is "Influence of Buddhism".

-- China Philosophies Summary is a Google Form that the students then write up to show what they learned about the three philosophies.

     China Module 4: Summary

-- Once the students have finished all of the modules, they can use their notes, and only their notes, to fill out the China Unit Summary.  The China Unit Summary is the final unit assessment.

Happy New Year and Welcome Back!!

Monday, 1/6

Q3 Goals (F, 1/10)  In Google Classroom students need to open up the Q3 Goals assignment and fill it out.  I am going to give students time in class to work on it tomorrow so they can be as successful as they choose to be and so I can also conference with students to help them get specific feedback on how to be successful in Social Studies.

S1 Vocab Test (F, 1/10)  On Friday there is a vocab test over all of the vocab we have studied in Quarter 1 and Quarter 2.  Students should have all of the vocab sheets in their binders, but if they are missing any, they can go to Grobe View or Google Classroom and access all of the previous sheets.  Also, In Grobe View are all of the materials we used for class and all of the Powerpoints I used to instruct students.

Thinking Skills (F, 1/10)  This is not homework tonight, and students will have time in class this week to do this assignment so if they use their time well they shouldn't need to do any of this at home.  The Thinking Skills are specific mental skills students can use to be more successful.  (Actually, they are helpful to any person, not just students!)

Grade Check (T, 1/7)  To get ready for the conference with me and in order to do the Q3 Goals assignment, students need to check their grades in StudentVUE.  My grades are updated and are the grades that will be on the official report card on Friday.  (Remember, this is a digital report card; no paper report cards are printed off and sent home to the parents.)

Homework for Week of 11/25

Monday, 11/25

Text Explorations 3 & 4 (F, 12/13)  Each quarter students are expected to read two outside books at their level for social studies and ELA.  (A total of two books, not four.) . Once a student is done reading a book, they should then go to Google Classroom and write up a Text Exploration for the book they read.  The book cannot be a book they are studying in ELA.  (No The Giver or Watsons Go to Birmingham.)  In the meantime, students should be reading about 15 minutes a day so they don't fall behind.

Sunrise Sim Journal (M, 12/2)  Two Fridays ago students started the Sunrise Simulation in class.  On Monday the 2nd the notes they took during class and the six entries for the journal are due on paper at the beginning of class.  (During class students had time to take notes on the new situations in the simulation and what their cabin group chooses to do about the new situation.  Students then wrote about each situation at home.  Students wrote those entries as pencil on paper writings or they could type it up at home.)  Here is the list of the situations that they experienced.  (There should be six journal entries.)

Sunrise Simulation Situations

Pre-situation 1

You are in orientation and Professor Zimm announces that you are allowed to take one bag of personal effects with you.  You can pack anything that fits in the bag, is not alive and is not against any of the rules and guidelines of the experiment.  Plan with your cabin group what each person will bring.

Situation 1

You have been taken by bus to your cabin by Professor Zimm and he has left you there to begin the experiment.  It is late afternoon towards the end of April. What would you now do for the next 12 hours?

Situation 2

You have now been in your cabin six weeks.  It is mid-May and the wildflowers are blooming.

1.  What is your cabin's current physical condition?

2.  Who is doing what work?

3.  Have there been any arguments?  If so, how have they been resolved?

4.  What is the condition of your food supply?  How are resources being distributed amongst the group members?

Situation 3

After being in your cabin five months, and with winter fast approaching, a week's supply of food

has mysteriously disappeared from your pantry.  Discuss with your cabin what you will do. Write

down what detailed plans you decide to do.  If you disagree with your group, write down why

you disagree and write down your plan.

Situation 4

You have been in the cabin nine months, and now you are snowbound with your cabin mates.  To get to the outhouse, the chicken coop and the barn, you have to shovel pathways.

1.  What adjustments will your group have to make to physically survive until spring?

2.  How are your relationships with your cabin mates changing?

3.  How do you personally feel about participating in this experiment now?

4.  Do you think this experience has changed your values and thinking any?  Are these values and thinking different from the "outside" world?

Situation 5

Professor Zimm has just sent you word that he has ordered the cameras and microphones turned off, but that the experiment is going to continue for the last 3 months.

1.  How does your group's behavior now change?

2.  How does your personal behavior now change?

Homework for Week of 11/18

Monday, 11/18

Text Explorations 3 & 4 (F, 12/13)  Each quarter students are expected to read two outside books at their level for social studies and ELA.  (A total of two books, not four.) . Once a student is done reading a book, they should then go to Google Classroom and write up a Text Exploration for the book they read.  The book cannot be a book they are studying in ELA.  (No The Giver or Watsons Go to Birmingham.)  In the meantime, students should be reading about 15 minutes a day so they don't fall behind.

Sunrise Sim Journal (Daily)  Last Friday students started the Sunrise Simulation in class.  The notes they took during the Orientation is the first entry for the journal.  Each day the students will participate in around two Situations in class.  During class students will have time to take notes on the situation and what their cabin group chooses to do about the new Situation.  Students will then need to write about each Situation at home.  Students can do these entries as pencil on paper writings or they could type it up at home.  At the end of the Simulation students will turn in all of their writing for a grade.  Students did not have anything to write at home tonight.

Homework for Week of 10/14

Monday, 10/14

Binder Check (W, 10/16)  At the end of class on Tuesday, or Wednesday, students need to leave their Social Studies binders.  Over the break I am going to grade them on how organized they are.  This is probably going to be the first grade for Quarter 2.  Students should go to Grobe View and review the document "19-20 Copy of Your Binder" to see what should be in the binder.  If anything from the document is missing, or if there are extra items that are not on the document, the student cannot get a "3."  Students have a week and almost a half to make copies of any missing items.  To find Grobe View, students should go to Google Classroom and open up the link to Grobe View or should go directly to their Google Drive, Shared With Me, and then open up the folder Grobe View there.

Grade Check (Tonight)  All assignments have been graded so students should check their grades tonight.  Whatever the grade is in StudentVUE tonight is going to be their final grade for Quarter 1.

if students were not in class today, they should come to social studies with a list of everything that makes them happy.  We will be using this list the second day of the lesson, on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Homework for Week of 10/7

Monday, 10/7

Binder Check (W, 10/16)  At the end of class on Tuesday (or Wednesday) students need to leave their Social Studies binders. To find Grobe View, students should go to Google Classroom and open up the link to Smiley View or should go directly to their Google Drive, Shared With Me, and then open up the folder Grobe View there.

USA UofCs (W, 10/9) On a blank sheet of paper, students need to write down two examples in the United States' culture of each of the Universals of Culture.  On Wednesday students will turn them in so they can be used.

UofC Vocab, all (T, 10/8) In Grobe View, in the Vocab section, there is a Universals of Culture vocab sheet.  Students have already been working on it in class, but since we hadn't finished all of the Universals, I am extending the deadline.  Many students were able to turn it in today which means they have less homework and they will have a higher P&SR grade for the assignment.  Students can make a copy of of the vocab by going to Google Classroom and opening up the folder Grobe View.  In the Vocab folder is the document.  They can open the document, go to File and Make a Copy of it.  After that they can then type in the My Definition and Schema connection sections, print it off and draw the nonlinguistic representations by tomorrow.  Or, students can print a blank copy of it and then handwrite the sections.  The vocab is for them, so I don't mind which way they do it.  However, a completed, paper copy is due tomorrow in class.

UofC PDF (T, 10/1) In Grobe View there is a PDF of the Universals of Culture presentation that I will be using in class.  Students should look it over so they know what it is there.  Students do NOT need to take notes about it, but they can always do more than what is asked.

Scholastic Order (F, 9/13)  Last week students got Scholastic book orders.  STUDENTS DO NOT NEED TO ORDER A BOOK IF THEY DO NOT WANT TO ORDER ONE.  However, since I require the students to read for their Text Explorations, I will provide Scholastic book orders to make it easier for them to get books to read.  If parents want to order and pay online with no paper involved, the URL for my classroom's orders is  https://orders.scholastic.com/GV72T .  Parents can order using the paper order form also.  Simply fill it out the order form with the student's name and send it in to me with a check made out to Scholastic.  All ordered books will be shipped to the school and I will give them to the students once they come in.  The link to all of the book orders is (https://editions.mydigitalpublication.com/publication/?i=606427).

Physical Geography Vocab, all (T, 9/10)  Today we finished going over the 10 physical geography vocab words.  Most students finished in class while I was explaining, but some students didn't finish so they need to do so tonight.  Tomorrow students need to turn in the PAPER copy of their vocab in class.

Binder Supplies (F, 8/9)  Students probably already have this finished.  They need to bring a 3-ring binder with dividers and lined paper to class tomorrow.  We will be organizing our binders tomorrow.

Parent Contact/Syllabus (F, 8/16)  I have not finished assigning this yet, so students cannot do this tonight.

Get To Know You (F, 8/16)  I have not finished assigning this yet, so students cannot do this tonight.

Friday, 8/9

Reading Book (T, 8/13) In social studies this year students will need to read two books each quarter.  These are the same two books as the outside reading requirement for ELA.  On Tuesday, every students needs to have the current book that they are reading on their desk, ready to show me.

Parent Contact/Syllabus (F, 8/16) Although students have written this assignment down previously, it is now available for them to do.  Parents, would you please use the provided URL to go to your student’s class period. Please fill out the questions there to allow me to get to know your student better, but also to allow me to set up an email list that I can use in the future to send Email Blasts to convey important information to guardians about social studies.  I greatly appreciate your help in establishing this important school/home communication. Thank you in advance! (Students will thank you too since they will get a Late Coupon for having their guardian fill out the form!)

Get To Know You (F, 8/16) Next week once the students know how to get onto Google Classroom they will be able to do this assignment.

THIS IS HOMEWORK DUE ON MONDAY ONLY IF STUDENTS DID NOT HAVE THEIR BINDER SUPPLIES FOR FRIDAY.  If students did not have their binder supplies for Friday, they need to organize their binder over the weekend.  Students need to have a 3-ring binder, labeled with their name on the outside or the inside cover of the binder.  This binder stays in the social studies' room so they have more room in their lockers.  They then should have four dividers:

    Bellwork

    VIP

    Vocab

    Current Unit

There should be loose-leaf lined paper after the Bellwork tab and the Current Unit tab.  Spiral notebooks don't work for Social Studies unless they are VERY thin and can be used exclusively in the Current Unit section.
